A.i.r. Zimbabwe – Sadza Sandwich
Artist in Residence Project in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (2000)
From February till May 2000 Ton Kraayeveld worked as guest-artist in a studio belonging to the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, the second largest city in the country situated in the very heart of Matabeleland. The National Gallery is an inspiring institute, under profound conduct of the African author Yvonne Vera, located in the monumental Douslin House in the city centre.
During the residence there were lots of contacts with local artists and various participations in exhibitions, among others in Gallery Delta, Harare.
‘The African Ton & Ton show’ the final exhibtion in the National Gallery showed works produced during the residency combined with those of Ton van Kints, the second visiting artist this period, also from the Netherlands.
An important work in this show, an installation entitled ‘Sadza Sandwich’, showed a first inventory of experience and visual sensations of everyday African reality in the form of a work of drawn and photographed fragments combined with pages on contemporary African art taken from Dutch art magazines.
Since that time impressions and experiences from Africa form the starting point for series of works in which the fascination for African reality is a significant element. An often returning image is the silhouette of a small township-house with corrugated iron roof like many can be found in townships round Bulawayo and Harare. In addition to the realism of these works now new images appear in which pseudo documentary elements referring to Africa are being designed for projection in a western cultural context.
Overall the artist in residence project in a non western culture has functioned as a mirror and impulse for reflecting and questioning the basic terms and conditions of western culture and own artwork from before.

Van februari tot mei 2000 werkte Ton Kraayeveld als gastkunstenaar in een atelier behorend tot de National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, de tweede stad van het land gelegen in het hart van Matabeland. De National Gallery is een inspirerend instituut, onder de bezielende leiding van de Afrikaanse schrijfster Yvonne Vera, gevestigd in het monumentale Douslin House in het centrum van de stad.
Tijdens de werkperiode waren er vele contacten met lokale kunstenaars en deelname aan tentoonstellingen o.a. in Gallery Delta, Harare.
Ter afsluiting vond in de National Gallery plaats de tentoonstelling ‘The African Ton & Ton Show waarin werken te zien van Ton Kraayeveld en Ton van Kints, de tweede Nederlandse gastkunstenaar in die periode.
Een belangrijk werk in deze tentoonstelling, een installatie getiteld ‘Sadza Sandwich’ toonde een eerste inventarisatie van ervaringen en visuele sensaties van de alledaagse Afrikaanse werkelijkheid in de vorm van getekende en gefotografeerde fragmenten gecombineerd met pagina’s uit Nederlandse kunsttijdschriften met als onderwerp hedendaagse Afrikaanse kunst.
De in Afrika opgedane indrukken en ervaringen vormen voor Kraayeveld sindsdien het uitgangspunt voor werken waarin de fascinatie voor de Afrikaanse werkelijkheid een verbindend element is. Een vaak terugkerend beeld is het silhouet van een stenen township-huis met golfplaten dakje zoals er vele staan in townships rond stedne als Bulawayo en Harare.
In vervolg op het realisme van deze werken verschijnen de laatste jaren werken waarin op pseudo-documentaire wijze aan Afrika refererende beelden worden ontworpen om te worden opgenomen in een westerse culturele context.
In het algemeen werkte de ‘artist in residence’ periode in een niet westerse cultuur als spiegel en aanzet tot inhoudelijke verdieping en vraagstelling ten aanzien van de uitgangspunten van onze westerse cultuur en van het eigen werk uit eerdere periodes.
