The World Goes On
The World Goes On — that was previously the title of an exhibition by Ton Kraayeveld and Nico Parlevliet in Rotterdam. A sober observation, but also a reassurance: no matter what happens, the world keeps turning.
But then it’s Friday the 13th, the day of the opening of the exhibition by these artists at Galerie Wijnstraat. A day when, according to persistent tales, the world seems just a little less certain. A ladder becomes an obstacle, a black cat a bad omen, and a simple accident suddenly takes on meaning. For one day, reality is handed over to superstition.
Kraayeveld and Parlevliet each move in their own way between reality and imagination, between seriousness and absurdity, between what we think we recognize and what escapes that. Their work doesn’t so much invite explanation, but to look and listen — and maybe to have some doubt about our own reality and certainties.
